Thank you for searching for help and resources to assist you when dealing with suicide attempters and their loved ones.
Here is A Checklist for Health Providers and Mental Health Practitioners when dealing with a mental health crisis, a person with suicidal intensity, or someone who has attempted suicide. In partnership with your checklist here is A Checklist for Parents and Families of People Living with Mental Illness to Assist in Communicating with Treatment Providers for your client or the people working to advocate for them.
One of the most important pieces of dealing with a crisis, like a suicide attempt, is Self-Care. This piece is too often neglected because we are working so hard to do a good job of helping others. If you are affected by a suicide attempt walk the walk of self-care. Don’t just talk the talk.
I have interviewed a professional who has been entrenched in therapy and helping others for years who didn’t understand depression or anxiety because he never had personally experienced it. After volunteering for the Red Cross in two different natural disaster zones in a couple of years he experienced post traumatic stress disorder, depression, anxiety and suicidal thoughts. You never know when your dedication to the safety and betterment of human nature will catch up with you or how it will affect you. If it does find you ask for help. Call in back up. The service you provide humanity is priceless. We need you. The professionals you have studied with and served with need you. You are important.
